Our Mad Hatter Halloween costume is probably one of our favorite Halloween costumes that we’ve put together. We’ve put together a quick Mad Hatter makeup tutorial on how to transform yourself into the Mad Hatter for a super fun Halloween costume this fall. Take a look at how we created this look and put your own spin on it.

How To Recreate The Mad Hatter’s Makeup
Let me begin by saying that i’m no professional… i know hard to believe .. HA 😉 But i wanted to share the steps I took to create this fun look.
What We Used To Create The Mad Hatter Look
– LA Girl White Foundation – Another foundation that might work even better is this MANIC PANIC Dreamtone Flawless White Liquid Foundation
– Eyeshadow – We used the NYX Professional Makeup Ultimate Eyeshadow Palette – Brights that we found at Target.
– Setting powder – NYX Professional Makeup Duo Chromatic Illuminating Powder – Twilight Tint – Target (if you’re doing the makeup on your mister you might want to get a flat white powder)
– White Eyeliner – NYX Professional Makeup Pure White Eye Pencil
– White mascara or mascara primer – I used the L’Oréal Voluminous Primer but there might be one that is a brighter white
– Blush – the brighter the better 🙂
– Foundation and eyeshadow primers – I used what I had at home, any type will work.
– Makeup Brush Color Removal Sponge Amazon (allows you to quickly and easily remove color from your brushes and switch colors – not necessary but so helpful!!)
Start with a clean face. If you’re using foundation primer apply that first to face and neck.
Apply the white foundation. I did several thin layers to get a brighter white color. I applied the foundation to my eyelids too, but I would have been better off using a white or very light eyeshadow primer on my lids.
Use your white illuminating powder to “set” your foundation. Move in gentle circles around your face and under your eyes.
Adding The Mad Hatter Eye Makeup
Let’s move on to the fun part… the eyes!! Here’s my advice…
- Always tap off the excess powder before applying or you’re going to end up with colored speckles all over your ghostly white face
- Work in thin layers and build on them. It’s much easier to correct this way.
- Start with the lightest color and work to the darkest.
Apply “1” under your brow. Then Add “2” to your entire lid. Add “3” to the crease and outer half of your lid.
Using a blending brush (or any clean brush if you don’t have one, I don’t judge) blend where the colors meet sweeping the brush lightly to the inner corner of your eye.
Add a little of the white chrome powder to the inner corner of your eye to make them pop.
Repeat this step with the three pink and purple colors above on your other eye.
Following the image above, use a small dry brush to apply a thin layer under each eye right below your lower lashes. Use the two pink colors under your purple eye and the two orange colors under your blue eye.
Apply your white eyeliner to line both your top and bottom lashes.
I covered my brows in the white mascara first. Not sure how much that made a difference, maybe additional eyeshadow primer would help create a better base for the orange brows.
Wet your brush and combine the two orange colors shown above to create the Mad Hatter’s crazy brows.
You could follow your own brow line or go a little larger. It’s a lot easier to start thin and go larger.
Apply the blush right along your cheekbones and a little below sweeping back toward your hairline. Next, apply your lipstick/gloss or both 😉 and your makeup is done!
DIY Mad Hatter Halloween Costume
I purchased the wig a few years ago on Amazon – similar one found here.
The hat we made following Threadbanger’s video tutorial. The hat is seriously is one of my favorite parts of the costume.
We made the thread bandolier using wooden spools that we wrapped in different colored thread and looped together with yarn.
For the ribbon tassels that hang from his jacket pocket we simply cut different pieces of ribbon and attached them with a safety pin to the jacket.
The rest of the costume was pieced together from items that we purchased at a thrift store. I found a thrift store pinkish blouse with lace cuffs we glued on from a thrift camisole.
The suede jacket was found at the thrift store as well and could easily be switched out for a thrift store blazer. We glued thin brown ribbon onto the jacket to recreate the detail in the jacket.
My husband actually wore the same costume a couple years prior to this and we found him some pants that we cut a little too short and added the excess material to the bottom of the hem to make them more bell shaped.
It’s difficult to see from the picture, but we also cut holes in the bottom of a pair of old argyle socks and used them as fingerless gloves.
The material for the scarf around my neck, as well as the fabric to create the hat and sash on the hat was all found at the fabric store. This costume is SO much fun and not too time consuming to put together.
Have fun creating your Mad Hatter makeup and costume to complete your look. And remember… we’re all mad here 😉
what have you done with the hair? i am constantly looking for some ideas but i have not found the perfect one. any pieces of advice? tips? my natural hair are dark brown and wavey. i am not sure about the artificial because it is a bit challenging to find a Mad Hatter wig in Poland where i live, even via internet
help me!!!!
Julia – if you can’t find a wig, would just focus on the hat and your makeup and rock those natural brunette locks of yours. I’ve seen some that do a curly messy high ponytail and instead of doing a big mad hatter hat they do a smaller version on a headband that’s off to one side a bit.
I followed your tutorial for my daughter’s Mad Hatter costume at Dragon Con in Atlanta yesterday, and it came out perfectly! Target still sells that exact eyeshadow palette and eyeshadow primer really made it POP! Thank you!! I wish I could share a pic of her adorableness!
